Badges for Conservation
Last week my eight year old twins came home from school very excited to share with me an idea they and their their classmates have come up with, to raise money for conservation.
They are creating badges with hand drawn pictures of flora and fauna and conservation messages. They aim to sell the badges at school and donate the money to conservation in Sabah.
I have to admit the prices are rather steep and the selling techniques applied at home are pretty forceful but it was made very clear to me that my input on pricing and selling strategy was neither welcome nor necessary, as their class teacher had already bought one of their friends’ badges! and so I stay well out of it.
At home we talk a lot about the environmental problems our planet is facing and I know it is also very much part of the conversation at school with their teachers and peers. Their generation is growing up facing an urgent climate crisis, which is heartbreaking and can be very overwhelming to think about but I do believe that because we talk a lot to them about the natural world and spend as much time as we can exploring the outdoors, discussing the why’s and what’s of everything around us, they have a good understanding of and appreciation for nature.
The kids know that they themselves are very much a part of nature and as a result, it comes natural to them to make responsible choices in everyday life and they are finding ways and solutions to protect and help repair nature where they can.
